The IRS has posted a revised version of 2011 Form W-3, Transmittal of Wage and Tax Statements, on its website. Paper W-2 filers must file this form by Feb. 29, 2012.
Box b on Form W-3 has been expanded for the 2011 tax year to ask filers to provide additional information about the employer. There are five new check boxes. Filers must check one of the following boxes: (1) Federal government employer; (2) non-government employer exempt from tax under Code Sec. 501(c); (3) state/local Code Sec. 501(c) employer; (4) state/local non- Code Sec. 501(c) employer; or (5) none of the above.
The IRS had previously posted 2011 Form W-3 on its website, but it had to be revised because the Social Security Administration (SSA) reported difficulty in scanning the form. The IRS will not process the old version of 2011 Form W-3.
The changes above do not affect the 2010 Form W-3, which had to be filed by Feb. 28, 2011.
